14 21-6892 Request to Postpone to July 20, 2021
Accepting/Denying the attached Contract Amendment Request from Waste Management of Florida, Inc. (WMI) for amendments to Solid Waste and Recycling Collection Service Rates for Residential and Commercial Units.
I urge the Commission to vote NO on this resolution. Of course WM would like to hitch its wagon to a pricing index that is more favorable to their business model; that is not the contract they signed (which, BTW, was the most expensive option to the community in 2014, but the only one in which WM was the low bid). Besides, WM's corporate website proclaims a net cash increase of $355 million for Q1 of 2021 vs. Q1 of 2020, and projected Total Company revenue growth is expected to be 12.5% to 13%. It should not be on the backs of the taxpayers of Key West - who are still recovering from the economic downturn - to fund WM's generous financial projections. Please vote NO to renegotiation
We remember the fiasco of the 2014 Waste Management Contract decision. Can we avoid a repeat? Do the right thing in serving the taxpayers of Key West by rejecting these one-sided contract amendments (as recommended by your City Staff). Use all means to negotiate the best deal for constituents with Waste Management or another vendor (likely a RFP). Engaging the assistance of a subject matter expert to determine the best course of action would be advisable. Additionally, care for our environment is one of our core community values. We must walk the talk by requiring all commercial enterprises to recycle, even it costs more. This will require severe financial disincentives for not recycling.
